On this episode of Gritty Bowmen, we hang out with my new friend, Tim Burnett, of Solo Hunter. I’m a huge fan of Solo Hunter. If you don’t like the show, I don’t know what’s wrong with you. Solo Hunter is Gritty. The raw, Do It Yourself Nature of the show really appeals to me. In the show, Tim and Remi Warren are both the hunter AND the cameraman. That’s intense. I can barely film a hunt when we’ve got a full-time cameraman--I can’t even imagine trying to pull it off while trying to shoot an animal. Tim was easy to talk to. And he’s pretty much the same guy you see on the show--real gritty and down to earth.

In this podcast we meet with my Uncle Kevin Call and John Adams of High Point Outfitters guide service in Arizona.  Kevin and John and their team of guides are genuine, down to earth, hard working, smart hunters that are passionate about hunting and helping others be successful.  Unless it’s your wife, then things might get a little too intense. ;) They get real about what it’s like to hunt with a significant other and how sometimes it’s best to take a backseat, or you might end up sleeping in the doghouse.

They provide some tips and tricks on how to register for Arizona this coming year with the recent changes for 2016, as well as some of the changes in Colorado.

On this episode of Gritty Bowmen, we travel to Louisville Kentucky to attend the ATA trade show--ATA stands for Archery Trade Association. The ATA Trade Show is the archery and bowhunting industry’s LARGEST show. The show is a member-driven event to promote commerce within the archery and bowhunting industry.

In today’s podcast we visit with Eva Shockey. Eva’s dad, Jim Shockey, is one of the most well-known hunters in the world. Today, Eva co-hosts "Jim Shockey's Hunting Adventures" TV show and represents the Shockey family at outdoor trade and consumer shows.

Eva was a breathe of fresh air. She was easy to talk to, down to earth, and an excellent ambassador for hunting--challenging the stereotypical image of the knuckle-dragging, fist pumping, male hunter; Eva makes it difficult for those against hunting to claim that hunters are uneducated, heartless, animal-hating human beings. And for this, I thank her.

I hope you enjoy the show.

If you’re a hard-core elk hunter or you want to be, or even if you just like to dream about elk hunting but not actually do it--go to the ELK101 website online and check them out. Our friend Corey Jacobsen is killing-it with some of the best elk-hunting information and entertainment on the web. Elk101 is a true gold-mine of all things elk.

And Let me leave you with another great quote from Theodore Roosevelt who said, “It behooves every man to reemember that the work of the critic is of altogether secondary importance, and that, in the end, progress is accomplished by the man who does things.”

We all have a choice--we can be people who do things or people who criticise the work of others. It’s pretty simple really.. don’t be jerk. And get out there and do your thing.

Good luck on your hunts. And Stay Gritty!

Sadie Kennel has been hunting for about 7 years. She was born and raised in Idaho. What drives Sadie Kennel to hunt?

Sadie gets real about what it’s like to hunt in late season and what it’s like to hunt with her boyfriend, Jason Wright of Pure Elevation Productions.

Here's a little sample of today's podcast.

Sadie: My boot’s wet and he (Jason) gets the jetboil out and he’s trying to dry out my boot with the open flame and that’s not working. So finally he pulls out his dry sack that he has for his sleeping bag and says, “Here put this on”… I finally get out of the tent and I shove my foot in this dry bag and put it in my boot and I have my jetboil full of coffee and I’m just like dragging my feet over to the spot and it’s foggy… and we get there and I kinda see this weird silhouette. I thought it was a tree. It turns out it wasn’t a tree it was a deer.

Brian: How dramatically does that improve your mood?

Sadie: Oh instantly! It was like throw my pack off, gettin’ my crap together and I’m like, “Where are we sitting? Let’s do this!”

On this episode of The Gritty Bowmen we hang out with our friends Nick Best and Calvin Halladay to listen to the tale of Big ‘D’. An old cagey bull with a ton of character. The nickname Big ‘D’ stands for Daggers. Hunters often refer to the G4 antler as “The Dagger”, hence the name Big ‘D’. We hear about the history of this bull and how this bull survived so long on public land here in Oregon. We talk about the raffle tag being won by a poor college student and we learn about how Calvin helped hunt this bull and why. We also learn about late season elk hunting tactics.

On this episode of Gritty Bowmen, Aron and I were supposed to talk about Ethical Shot distance. But instead, we got side-tracked on a few tangents and completely left the reservation. In this podcast we actually talk about hunting industry camo patterns--Aron makes a few jokes--no offense intended. We talk about what’s going on at Kifaru lately. And we promise that our next episode will, in fact, cover ethical shot distance. Please excuse the poor audio quality of my microphone in this podcast--I screwed up.

On this Episode of Gritty Bowmen we hang out with my uncle Kevin Call--joint owner of High Point Outfitters in Arizona. Kevin runs highpoint with his son Blake and their longtime friend John Adams. Kevin knows Arizona--he’s been hunting Arizona since the 70’s.

I grew up watching my uncle Kevin hunt all over the West killing monster mule deer, elk, antelope and more. I grew up seeing photos of his hunts and his hunting stories in magazines and hearing hunting stories at family reunions. I can still remember the first time I walked into his giant garage--there were deer and elk antlers from floor to ceiling of all the animals he’s taken. To me, those antlers represent a mountain of time spent in the outdoors and a vast amount of collected experiences. In this podcast Uncle Kevin shares his thoughts on hunting AZ. My Dad and Kevin share some special memories of hunting Arizona in areas like the Kaibab and the Arizona Strip when they were younger. We talk about guiding and being an outfitter and why he does it.

And we learn about Kevin’s favorite game camera--after all, High Point Outfitters runs about 200 game cameras all year. Coincidentally, I bought a couple of the cameras recommended after recording this podcast and I’m quite pleased with their performance.

If you’re listening to this podcast you might want to take a moment to watch the beginning to see some pictures of some amazing Arizona elk, deer and antelope.
