On this episode of Gritty Bowmen we travel to Roseburg Oregon to the “quote, unquote” “Kellom Ranch” and we talk elk hunting with Trent Fischer and Kody Kellom of Born and Raised Outdoors. I’ve been a huge fan of Born And Raised Outdoors since I got my hands on one of their early DVDs, “The Reason.” I own every one one of their DVDs and every July, August and September I watch them over and over again. I like to run their show in the background in my basement while I’m working out. My wife and kids are sick of Born and Raised but I never get tired of them. They’re real. They are genuine. What you see on camera is who they are in real-life.  To me, the Born And Raised crew represents the quintessential public-land, over-the-counter-elk hunter. They find a why to kill elk with a bow year after year. AND, they capture it on film in a way that’s real. Just like how it is for me with my hunting buddies. I’ve come to know these guys on a personal level--with Kody Kellom and Ty Stubblefield becoming what I consider close friends.

On this podcast they tell us about their secret sauce for consistently killing elk. We share hunting stories and we talk about how they got started. It’s all GRITTY stuff. Do me a favor and go and follow Born And Raised Outdoors on Instagram if you aren’t already. They are the good guys--good ole’ fashion Oregon boys who love to hunt. And check-out their Youtube Channel and subscribe. They’ve got some killer elk-hunting video on there and they’re adding new stuff weekly. Finally… for those of you wondering if Born And Raised Outdoors is EVER going to produce another DVD--you can stop wondering. They FINALLY did another DVD--it will be available on July 1st at www.bornandraisedoutdoors.com

On this episode of Gritty Bowmen, we hang out with Corey Jacobsen of Elk101, Kody Kellom of Full Draw Film Tour and Born And Raised Outdoors, and our mutual friend Clint Radford--elk hunter, blacktail hunter, high school teacher, Sitka gear-junky, and family man. On this podcast we finally talk about #PROJECTSUCCESS or rather, UEH. The University of Elk Hunting--this is Corey’s new online elk hunting course. This course is the culmination of 30-years of elk hunting experience. In fact, the course is more than 120,000 words, has more than 70 video components and hundreds of diagrams and images. This course is seriously awesome. On this podcast, Clint tells us about his thoughts on the training courses. This podcast can’t help but come off as a giant sales-pitch to get you to buy this online course--and even though that’s kinda what this podcast is--it’s also way more than that. I really do believe that the course is worth every penny to every elk hunter out there. And, shamelessly, I would love to see Corey get wildly rewarded for the work he’s put into this course and for the knowledge he freely shares to help elk hunters across the world find greater success year after year in the elk woods. Corey has worked his butt off to make this online course come to life. So sit back, listen to the show and if you like what you’ve heard--do yourself a solid, and enroll in UEH.

The discount code is GRITTY40--the word GRITTY, G R I T T Y and the number 40--with this discount code you’ll save 40% off the University of Elk Hunting online course. The code expires on Halloween night. It’s $59 bucks with the code and $99 dollars without it. It’s worth every penny. Stay GRITTY friends!

On this episode of Gritty Bowmen, Brian gets some schooling on how to adjust a backpack for running a race with 100lbs. vs. hunting and packing your meat out. Brian also gives us the run down of the recent Train To Hunt event in Enumclaw, Washington where he decided to run the 100lb. meat pack event “for fun”. Aron shares his knowledge on the ins and outs of pack adjustment and weight distribution.

On this episode of Gritty Bowmen, I visit with friend Josh Nordwick of Mountain Fitness: The Hunters Fitness Solution. I know many people who exercise regularly but are plagued with pain in their low-back, hips, knees, shoulders, and more. And I have friends and family members who have lived sedentary lives behind computers or behind the wheel of a truck and now suffer with chronic back and neck pain and more. In this podcast Josh and I talk a little about how to get your body back--how to get your back pain, knee pain, neck pain...  to go away. It’s about proper body movement to build strength and correct bad movement patterns. If you’re body feels like it’s falling apart, learn how to fix it and make it strong again. Josh is a young dude who geeks out on health and fitness. He loves to help people who have lost hope. Who don’t think they can live an active, outdoor lifestyle any longer--who think that age has caught up to them and it’s time to cash in their chips and just watch the young hunters get it done without them. I hope you like Josh and you learn something new from this podcast--and maybe, just maybe some of you will find a way to get your body back. Connect with Josh at joshnordwick.com and on Facebook at Mountain Fit: The Hunters Fitness Solution.

On this episode of Gritty Bowmen, Aron Snyder and myself hang out with the Eastmans, Guy and Ike Eastman of the Eastmans’ Hunting Journal, Eastmans’ Bowhunting Journal and Eastmans’ TV.

The Eastmans’ tradition began in 1956 with Gordon Eastman. Gordon was a true pioneer in adventure hunting and outdoor wildlife cinematography. His first project was in the wilds of Alaska. He was also among the first to ever film in the North Country, and built such a solid reputation that Walt Disney himself hired Gordon to film outdoor productions in the 1960s.

Today Mike, Guy and Ike carry on Gordon’s legacy by producing the industry-leading publications of Eastmans’ Hunting and Bowhunting Journals in combination with the award-winning Eastmans’ Hunting TV show that airs 52 weeks a year and showcases fair chase rifle and bow hunts on all western big game.

This is just a fun podcast with some solid dudes! If you’re not subscribed to Eastmans’ Hunting Journal and/or Eastmans’ Bowhunting Journal you should go to www.eastmans.com
and get signed-up. Eastmans’ has been around for a long time and continues to be a powerful influence for good in the hunting industry. Get involved, support their work and get yourself a sweet western hunting magazine to boot.

On this episode of Gritty Bowmen I travel to Boise Idaho to visit with friend Corey Jacobsen, multiple time world elk-calling champion and owner of ELK101.com. On this episode Corey and I talk more about #PROJECTSUCCESS--an exciting ELK101 initiative. We get into solo-hunting and solo-calling for elk. This topic leads us to more discussions about the controversial face-on frontal shot, and Corey drops some bonafide measurements regarding the frontal shot opening. We talk about the moon-phase and its effect on elk hunting. We discuss some of the current threats to our public lands and we get into scent-control and cover-scent products for elk hunting. It’s GRITTY stuff!

Okay friends! On this episode of Gritty Bowmen we hang out with our Central Oregon friends Randy and Candy Yow. Randy and Candy are not “show” names--they’re real names. Randy and Candy have been on the show once before and we had them back again because we like them so much. Randy and Candy are down-to-earth cowboy and cowgirl cattle ranching type folks who love hunting. Together they created a TV show called Extreme Desire TV. New episodes of their show will be shown on the Pursuit Channel the 3rd week of June on Friday evenings at 8:00PM Pacific Time.

But today’s podcast isn’t about their TV show. It’s about a super cool event that Candy puts on that helps female hunters learn new hunting skills. The event is called the North West Ladies Hunting Camp--and it’s awesome! The camp offers firearm training for pistol, rifle, and shotgun. You can learn archery, fire starting, field dressing, map and compass reading, backcountry safety, wildlife photography, self-defense, concealed weapon carry, and more. This camp is for the city-slicker who has never been camping or the advanced hunter who wishes to learn some new skills. On this podcast we talk about the camp. Krissy Hay Knox, Bowtech Ambassador, shares her experience being an instructor at last year’s camp. And we hear from Asha Aiello. She’s a relatively new female hunter and she describes the barriers that some women feel about getting into hunting and how this camp can make the difference. Asha is the Tualtin Cabelas Marketing Manager and a major supporter of this Women’s camp.

You can learn more about the camp online at www.ladieshunting.com. If you want to attend a camp like this, but can’t make it to this year’s camp or the camp was sold out when you tried to register, send Candy Yow an email and tell her you want to go. Seriously, like fill her inbox up with requests for a camp you can attend. Candy’s email is candy@ladieshunting.com. If you like what Candy and Randy are doing, send them a note. Tell them thank you. And if you are in a position to support their work, give them what you can.

Okay friends! On this episode of Gritty Bowmen Mark Brownlee and myself hang out with our friend Greg Munther at the annual (BHA) Backcountry Hunters and Anglers Rendezvous. Greg is from the older generation… like he’s 72 years old. But he doesn’t seem that old--he’s still getting out and killing big horn sheep, coues deer, mule deer, and elk with his stickbow, which he’s been shooting his entire life. Greg tells us how he uses Llamas to help him get things done in the backcountry. He’s an inspiring person. And his passion for the outdoors and for hunting is infectious. In his younger years, Greg Munther was a Forest Service biologist, District Ranger and natural resource consultant.  He has been roaming the hills, streams and lakes of Montana continuously since 1976, with passions split between bowhunting, bird hunting and flyfishing.  He lives in Missoula with his wife, Sherry, of 35 years and their German Shorthair Pointer Lucy, and their 3 llamas. Greg is the BHA Montana Chapter Chairman. Ladies and gentlemen, meet Greg Munther.

This episode of Gritty Bowmen was recorded a year ago on the ferry ride home from Prince of Wales island Alaska on the Alaska Marine Highway System--traveling from Ketchikan, Alaska to Bellingham, Washington. On this episode of Gritty Bowmen I am joined by my long-time friend and college roommate, Chad Nelson and by my brother, Brent. We talk about some of the logistics in getting to POW island and returning home again with hundreds of pounds of meat and bear skins. We talk about meat care and our experience traveling on the Alaska ferry system. This podcast is packed with video from this hunt--and I highly recommend that you watch this podcast on our Website, Youtube Channel, Podbean or through iTunes on Gritty Bowmen TV. I sincerely hope that this episode gets you excited about your upcoming outdoor adventures. And for those of you who are chasing bears this spring--good luck to you! Shoot straight and stay gritty.

On this episode of Gritty Bowmen, Mark Brownlee and I do a little Heather’s Choice taste test. Heather’s Choice is owned by Heather Kelly. Heather was on episode 114 of the Gritty Bowmen podcast--and on that episode we geeked out on nutrition and talked about her backcountry meals. On that episode, the Gritty Scotsman and I said that we would do a little taste test of Heather’s Choice meals and report back to you. We also said, we would go one step further and perform a poop test--you know… validate whether Heather’s food exists the body without causing undue harm.

We are happy to report that Heather’s Choice does not cause any stomach cramping, bloating, farting, or other gastrointestinal miseries. We did not film the results of the poop test--you’re gonna have to take our word for it.

In this podcast I read from an article in Elk Hunter magazine about Heather’s Choice meals. But I mistakenly say the article is in Western Hunter magazine--it’s not. Just to be clear, the Heather’s Choice article is in the recent summer 2016 edition of Elk Hunter magazine.

If you’re one of those people who can’t stand it when people talk while eating--this podcast isn’t for you. We did not record this video with the intention of it being a formal podcast--so it’s a unpolished. Listen at your own risk. Better yet, go watch it on our website or through Gritty Bowmen TV on iTunes.

On this episode of Gritty Bowmen, Aron Snyder, Anthony Spencer, and myself hang out with the veritable, authentic, what-you-see-is-what-you-get, sheep hunting adventurer Bryan Martin of Asian Mountain Outfitters. Bryan has hunted all over the world--from Canada and the U.S. to the Asian countries of Kyrgyzstan, Mongolia, Russia, Pakistan, Tajikistan and more. On this episode of Gritty Bowmen we discuss rugged mountain hunting--our topics range from dealing with such things as swamp butt to whether or not women are as tough as men. A fair warning: things get dicey in this podcast--Bryan is a little like Donald Trump--not too worried about saying things that offend people. And Bryan isn’t shy about his opinions either. Like I said, what you see is what you get--Bryan is direct and too the point. We have attached a copy of Bryan’s gear list to the show notes on our website for this podcast episode. On this episode of Gritty Bowmen, we hang out with our friend Cory Miller, owner of xXx Archery, at his bowshop in Rainier Oregon. We talk to Cory about compound-bow tuning. This podcast has some visual footage that you will want to watch if this stuff is new to you. At the very end of this podcast we inserted some video footage of Cory teaching my cousin Ben how to properly grip and hold a compound bow when shooting. In Cory’s experience as a tournament bow shooter for PSE and an archery shop owner--improper grip is one of the most common mistakes that he sees in archery shooters. Checkout the video at the end of this podcast for a brief lesson from Cory on how the grip should be done. If you live in the area, check-out xXx Archery--it’s worth the drive. And now, Cory has a super-cool Techno Shoot that’s a blast to play with. He’s a “real” hard-core traditional archer. He and I and Mark Brownlee get to know each-other on this podcast. We talk about his films, which I highly recommend. And I think Clays films are especially good to share with your non-hunting friends. You can find his films at http://www.twistedstave.com/ I really like Clay. He’s a deep and thoughtful person. On this episode of Gritty Bowmen I travel to Boise Idaho and visit with friend, Russ Meyer and his wife Carole. This podcast is about relationships--it’s about life AND hunting. It’s about balance. The balance between the drive to be outdoors, often away from the ones we love most, and time at home with family. Many couples struggle when one person in the family has a passion for hunting that the other doesn’t understand. And it goes both ways. Sometimes the passionate hunter alienates their loved ones in the pursuit and fulfillment of their own personal interest to be in the mountains, in the deserts, or on the water. Many relationships have crashed and burned in the unreconcilable void between the hunter and those he or she leaves at home.   How does a couple reconcile their differences? Why do these differences strengthen some relationships while destroying others.

In this podcast, we talk to a couple who seems to have figured out how to reconcile their differences. We are going to find out what works for them. You will hear about the struggles they’ve had as a couple and how they’ve overcome them.

The more I get to know a person, the more I realize how much we’re alike as human beings. We all have fears and doubts. We all struggle--life isn’t always easy. But life is awesome. The journey is awesome. And in this podcast we get to know Russ and Carole on a more intimate level. I want to thank them for sharing their lives so openly. I tend to talk too much in this podcast. For those of you who don’t know Russ, let me tell you something about him--he’s a man of few words. Let’s just say he’s not going to dominate the conversation. That said, my goal is to understand him--to get to know him; to find out what he thinks and why he does the things he does. As a result, I find myself talking quite a bit about my own experiences in this podcast. And as Carole gives me insight into their lives--I cannot help but share my own thoughts on the subjects discussed. So please indulge my excessive input. And I hope, in some small way, that this podcast helps you strengthen the relationships in your own life.

She is the owner and operator of OPENutrition and the creator of Heather's Choice. She was born and raised in Alaska and she loves adventuring in the backcountry; she is an all around badass. And a nerd. A food nerd. And  that’s how Heather’s Choice was born. Heather has created her own, epic backcountry meals and they’re now available to all of us. All of the recipes Heather has developed for Heather's Choice are meant to be nutritionally balanced, and made with the highest quality ingredients available. Heather believes that everyone deserves to have a healthy + satisfying relationship with food, which comes from eating nutritious + satiating foods.
