Join us for today’s podcast as Mark Brownlee and I visit, backstage, with the boys from the full draw film tour and some chuckleheads from the audience while on location at the Portland show. This podcasts consists of 4 20-minute interviews.  First we interview Joe Sanchez and Morgan Gregory. Joe drops some helpful tips on using Instagram and explains how he’s pretty sure that he was the first hunter ever to post on Instagram. Morgan shares some insight on filmmaking tools and they both answer questions about filmmaking.

Next up we visit with Brad Minzey and Josh Marvin. And they share their passion for the Full Draw Film Tour and why they got involved in the tour. We have a great time getting to know these two guys and they inspire us to get involved and support the tour.

Next we visit with two of our good friends and audience members, Cory Miller of XXX archery and Jason Phelps of Phelp’s Game Calls. These two jokers talk about the pink hat and how Portland raised more money for the Wishes For Warriors charity than any other city to that point. The share the story of how Chris Pascua of Is It September Yet, donated his raffle prize --a brand new Hoyt bow--to Wishes For Warriors. The bow was auctioned off that night and raised more than $1,000 for Wishes for Warriors--adding significantly to the total dollars that evening. And Jason and Corey share a few parting elk hunting tips before the conversation is over.

Lastly, we sit down with our good friend Kody Kellom and huge FDFT supporter, Mike Crawford. These two men share their passion for the tour and why it’s more than just a collection of movies for them. And they tell us what they think makes a good film and more.

I hope you enjoy this podcast. Sit back, grab a drink, and listen-in as a group of good guys talk about their love of hunting, their desire to give back to veterans, and how things like the FDFT are changing the world’s perception of hunting in a positive way.

SHOW NOTES:

Friends, I highly recommend that you watch this podcast, if you can, as I have video and photo images from the hunt overlaying much of the conversation. As for this hunt, as Aron Snyder says, I’m not gonna church it up. We made some dumb mistakes on this hunt. And I guess that’s part of why I love hunting. There are no guarantees--just like in life. We all work hard to perfect our skills--our shooting, our calling, our fieldcraft, our fitness... but at the end of the day things can and do go wrong during a hunt as they do in life and you’ve got to improvise. Sometimes it’s not skill that you need, it’s grit. It’s determination. And Anthony Spencer has that. He’s as gritty as they come.

I wish I could say that Anthony’s bull felt no pain and went down easy. But it didn’t work out that way. Taking the life of another sentient being is not something we take lightly. Yet, it’s an everyday part of the natural world we live in. Animals hunt to eat and eat to live--including humans. And this endeavour results in pain and death to animals everyday. An ethical and compassionate hunter will always do his best to make the death as swift and painless as possible. But sometimes, despite our best efforts we fail in this. There are no guarantees--no gimmees in hunting--nor in life. Things will and do go wrong if you hunt long enough. I’m okay with that. Because that’s how life is. I didn’t want my wife to have cancer, but it happened. Sometimes, we don’t get to choose how it goes. The Hunting TV industry likes to pretend that mistakes don’t happen and animals don’t suffer. But that’s not reality. The Gritty Bowmen isn’t on a TV network, we don’t have anybody telling us what we can and cannot show. So what you get is the gritty truth. And I’m sorry to those who imagine that bliss is normal. Because as Jenkin Lloyd Jones said, “you’re going to waste a lot of time running around shouting that you’ve been robbed. The fact is that most putts don’t drop. most beef is tough, most children grow up to just be people… most jobs are more dull than otherwise. Life is like an old time rail journey… delays, sidetracks, smoke, dust, cinders and jolts, interspersed only occasionally by beautiful vistas and thrilling bursts of speed. The trick is to thank the Lord for letting you have the ride.”

In this episode you'll find out what makes the Gritty Bowmen so gritty. The mental toughness and determination and sacrifice it takes to get the job done. "Those things are good for ya. It's always good to challenge yourself a little bit and not quit." - Anthony Spencer

"I know you could never tell by looking at me... but I'm not an endurance athlete. So it's not that I was in such phenomenal  endurance condition that I could chase him down. What it took was a mind set. Ya know, I am stubborn. That was the other thing I learned this week. I'm really not that great of an elk hunter. I can screw up a lot of things really quickly.  But I am stubborn and I am persistent and I had made up my mind I wasn't going to quit running that bull. If I had given up on him that wouldn't have happened." - Anthony Spencer

ARON'S ADVICE:

Go somewhere that has a great return policy like Zappos. http://www.zappos.com or REI. Try stair climbing in them at home. You don’t have to “break them in” to know if they’re going to fit right. Clean them and treat them with what they recommend.

EPISODE 27: Elk Hunting-How Corey Jacobsen Does It! Part 1

Show Notes:

Elk Hunting Tactics - Strategies

What is the most important think you can’t fake you have to put effort into for Elk Hunting? What’s the one thing you need to be focusing on? "Confidence."

Which you gain from experience.  That killer instinct comes from experience.

“It’s all about channeling that adrenaline rush.” “Channel that excitement into the thrill of the hunt.” Corey Jacobsen

Corey’s Typical Setup

“I want a fight! I want him coming in hot.”

Closing the distance- Get as close as you can get. When you hit that point you can’t go any further, stop and set up.

Shooting lanes- We say, “This is where we want the bull to come in.”

Caller moves back 30-40 yards.  Just to a point where the bull has to come into the shooters lane before seeing the caller.

The Caller lets out a simple cow callOnce the bull responds- as soon as he responds- no matter what he responds with the caller hits him with a challenge bugle. Be immediate. In fact we usually cut him off. Put that aggression and emotion into it.

“It works!”

SHOW NOTES:

This week on Gritty Bowmen we meet with Jordan and Casey Harbertson of MTN OPS. These two guys are salt-of-the-earth, good guys who LOVE what they're doing.

Performance and fitness are very important to me. But I care less about performance and more about long-term health and wellness. I want to be elk hunting in the mountains when I'm 70 years old-- and I'm not kidding. So I'm not willing to sacrifice my health at the future age of 65 for increased performance today. I'm a huge skeptic when it comes to supplements. Instead of buying supplements I have tried my best to get all my nutrition from healthy foods. I really don't like meal replacements or performance enhancing products. I prefer a good elk steak with a pile of veggies, high fiber fruit and some water.

On this episode of Gritty Bowmen we meet with Jay Scott. Jay is the mastermind behind the Jay Scott Outdoors Big Game Hunting and Fishing Podcast. He has more than 50 podcast episodes with tremendous guests on a broad range of topics all related to western big game hunting and fishing.

Jay lives in Scottsdale, Arizona with his wife Jeanne. Jay has been a professional hunting and fishing guide in the state of Arizona for 16 years. He spends more than 120 days in the field guiding and hunting across the United States. And Jay is currently a Field Editor for Western Hunter Magazine and hunting editor for Elk Hunter Magazine. As well as being a hunter, Jay’s other passion is fly fishing.

In today’s podcast you’ll hear us discuss the stigma that much of the DIY hunting community harbors toward hunting guides and the use of hunting guide services. Jay and I discuss the use of sponsorships--or, the paid promotion of products--We talk about their value and their sometimes negative impact on the hunting industry. And although we both promote health and fitness, Jay brings up a valid concern which I agree with--that some hunters place so much emphasis on fitness that they fail to learn fieldcraft, how to sit still for hours, how to read sign and track game, and other basic and not-so-basic hunting and fishing skills.

It was a pleasure meeting Jay Scott. I applaud his podcast and I look forward to hearing more great content from Jay and his stellar guests. I am Brian Call and I am your host. And without further ado, here is today’s podcast.

In today’s podcast we travel to Hoodoo Oregon for the second-leg of the NW Mt Challenge. We meet up with Kody Kellom of Born and Raised Outdoors and Jon Walusiak, joint owners of the Full Draw Film Tour. Jon is also the owner of W- Design company. These two guys are the engine that run the Full Draw Film Tour. Now... some of you may be asking, “what is the Full Draw Film Tour?” To quote the Gritty Scotsman, “If you donn’a know what the tour is, you need to climb out from under the rock you been livin’ under and listen to this podcast.”

In this podcast you’ll learn all about the Full Draw Film Tour. You’ll learn about Jon and Kody’s vision behind it. As Kody said: “Our goal with the FDFT is to capture them, move them, and change them.” You’ll hear Kody and Jon’s opinion on the 3 ingredients that make a good film based on their combined years of experience running the tour and literally observing nearly 100 different audiences--learning what they like, what captures them, what moves them and what changes them.

I first met Kody at the FDF School. Where I met South Cox, Kristy Titus, Born and Raised Outdoors, Joe Sanchez, Grady Rawls, Walt Ramage and more. We were put into teams of 3 and I was grouped with Kristy Titus and Josh Keller who were a TON of fun. And these people inspired me.

And for this reason and many more, I have a special affection for this tour and these guys. It’s undeniable that the Full Draw Film Tour has had a huge impact on my life.

So it was pleasure to sit and talk to Jon and Kody about the tour. To hear about the money they’ve raised for charities like hunt of a lifetime and Wishes for Warriors. To hear how the tour has inspired people and changed lives. I STILL think the tour should have been called The GRITTY Full Draw Film Tour, but whatever.

I’m Brian Call, and I’m your host, Mark Brownlee--the Gritty Scotsman--is my co-host and without Further ado, here is today’s podcast.

On this episode of Gritty Bowmen, Aron Snyder decides to do a Kifaru backpack giveaway to Gritty Bowmen podcast listeners. I’m not so big into advertising or offering promotional stuff or into sales. But I’ve been receiving emails and PMs daily from people who cannot find our podcast on iTunes under the hunting or outdoors category searches. Our listeners have found us by word of mouth or on Youtube, FB or Instagram. In fact, when you go to iTunes and do a category search for outdoor podcasts, the Gritty Bowmen podcast does not show up in the search. Apparently, only featured podcasts by Apple are shown. According to apple, they couldn’t show all the outdoor podcasts or there would be thousands. So the chances of someone finding the Gritty Bowmen podcast by browsing in iTunes for a hunting podcast is very slim until Apple recognizes our podcast and features our content. And apparently, our Gritty Bowmen cover art in iTunes is too gory for apple so we’re thinking about changing that.

I want the Gritty Bowmen brand to grow organically, to be made up of genuine fans with an interest in what we’re doing. I want every review on iTunes to be obtained because someone is genuinely into the show—and NOT because we’re giving away a pack or doing some other promotional offer. So until now, we have avoided promotional offers. But then I got to thinking, do I leave reviews for the podcasts I listen to, and really like? The truth is, before I started my own podcast I rarely left reviews for the podcasts I listened to and thoroughly enjoyed. So I realized, a little motivation can go a long way. I’m sure you folks are just like me—you’re busy, you have jobs, family and life tugging at you. And I remember the first time I tried to leave a review on iTunes—after 30 minutes of effort and still no review I gave up. It wasn’t until I was sufficiently motivated to leave a review that I stuck with it until I figured out how to do it. So… hence the backpack giveaway. What kind of hunter wouldn’t want a chance at a free backpack anyway! I hope the possibility of winning a free backpack can justify the time it will take for you to leave us review.

In this podcast you will learn why Aron Snyder is NOT in charge of this  backpack giveaway. His bleeding heart is just not as unbiased as mine. A-Aron just needs to leave this give away to the professionals at the Gritty Bowmen. Aron just needs to donate the pack—we’ll take it from here.

Aron seems to think that our listeners in Djibouti should be left out of the giveaway. But we, at the Gritty Bowmen will not discriminate. Which brings up another point, the giveaway is not restricted to Apple users. You android and apple-haters can participate in the giveaway by leaving us a review on Stitcher. And while you’re leaving us a review on Stitcher or iTunes—be sure to subscribe to the podcast if you haven’t already. This way, you can have all of the episodes automatically download to your mobile device so you can enjoy them anytime, anywhere. And for people like Tom Ryle or my college roommate Chad Nelson, who are struggling with leaving us a review on iTunes or Stitcher, Mark Brownlee and I will be creating a little “Gritty Tip instructional video on “how to leave a review and how to subscribe to a podcast.” So look for that Gritty Tip in the next week or so. The deadline to participate in the giveaway is September 10th so don’t worry, you have some time to wait for our little instructional video to do your review.

Lastly, the giveaway extends to everyone who has EVER left us a review.

And without further ado, here is today’s podcast.

Alright folks,

As you can see, Aron is not qualified to manage this backpack giveaway. Although he is very qualified to donate the pack to the give away. in all seriousness, I want thank Kifaru International for supporting our show and what we’re doing. And I want to personally thank Aron Snyder for being a regular on the show and graciously sharing his expertise. And I want to thank all of you out there listening and supporting the show—your feedback is awesome.

Stay tuned for our instructional video on how to leave a review and how to subscribe to a podcast. I wish you all great success in your lives and in your hunts this year. Stay Gritty!

“Backcountry Meat Care,Tips and Tactics”

    - In this podcast Aron Snyder shares his tips and tactics for caring for game meat in the backcountry. This is not a ground-breaking podcast—there are literally thousands and thousands of resources for backcountry meat care. This podcast consists mostly of common sense. But if you’re new to hunting or haven’t spent much time caring for meat in the backcountry in warm weather this podcast is for you. And for you seasoned

“Don’t grab an apple-scented Glad bag and start cramming meat in there…” “Pretend like you’re gonna serve that meat in two hours and so you do everything you can to keep it clean.”

“Don’t have the bi-polar meat processing issue…”

Avoid bi-polar meat processing issues. Don't move it from shady spot to shady spot throughout the day. Pick a spot that will be shady all day.

On this episode of Gritty Bowmen we are back in Tamarack Idaho for the annual NW Mountain Challenge Archery Shoot and we talk to Ty Stubblefield and Josh Keller of Born and Raised Outdoors. We discuss Ty’s new role with BackCountry Hunters & Anglers as Chapter Coordinator and the importance of conservation, the threat against our hunting lifestyle and how we can join the fight to preserve our traditions, values and way of life. If you’re not familiar with Born and Raised Outdoors you should take some time to get to know these boys through their films which are some of the most real, honest and entertain elk hunting films I’ve seen.

I really hope you enjoy this podcast because it’s important—the opposition facing hunters today is very real—and Ty Stubblefield is one of those people who is on the front-lines battling to keep our public lands public. As you listen to today’s podcast, please consider what you’re doing to make a difference in preserving the way of life you believe in.

I am Brian Call and I’m your host. My fellow Gritty Bowmen, Anthony Spencer is my co-host.

This week on Gritty Bowmen we travel to Tamarack Idaho for the annual NW Mountain Challenge Archery Shoot and we talk to Corey Jacobsen, 7-time world champion elk caller, elk killing machine, and Owner of Extreme Elk Magazine, and most importantly, Husband and father to 3 awesome kids, Isaac, Jessi, and Samuel. Young Isaac is quite the elk caller—here he is giving my hunting partners, Ben and Anthony a lesson on how to bugle with attitude.

The NW Mt. Challenge was a total blast. After Corey graciously spent the late-afternoon shooting this podcast with us, we had the pleasure of spending the evening shooting our bows on the night course with he and his family. We met is lovely wife Jennifer, who is super cool for many reasons, not least of which because she’s an archer and shoots a cool bow. The night shoot at Tamarack was super cool and was fun for the whole family. Donnie Drake, Corey’s longtime friend and hunting partner shot the night course with us and we were able to get a glimpse of the brotherhood these men share.

In today’s podcast you’ll hear about what makes a good hunting partner. Corey will tell you how long he’s hunted with his hunting partners and why. And you’ll learn about things such as Corey’s dream situation for killing big bulls.

If you missed the NW Mt. Challenge in Tamarack ID you can still attend the NW Mt. Challenge at the Hoodoo Ski Resort in Oregon July 24th, 25th, & 26th. There are 4, 3-D courses on the mountain, including a kids course. There are archery competitions. Raffles and more. The Full Draw Film Tour will be at Hoodoo Saturday night with a presentation of the film tour on a big outdoor screen. And you can see our film there. We hope to see you at Hoodoo!

In this podcast I have a lot of fun talking with Aron Snyder about Fieldcraft. Aron shares some valuable bits of advice and some deep insights such as the following:

What is fieldcraft you may ask?

Although snares and mushrooms are discussed briefly in this podcast the focus is more on what you need to know to survive in a wilderness, survival situation. We talk about how to start fires, how not to get lost but how to handle the situation if you do. We talk about Aron Ralston and whether you should chop your arm off like he did and if you do, how should you do it? In a moment of vulnerability I confess that I carry two GPS units to which Aron has a difficult time not saying something snarky. Hey, I’m easily lost.

Of course, the podcast would not be complete without a few tangents, which, this week, includes discussions about non-hunters, photography, film and our upcoming hunts this year.

Main Points:
Be prepared.
Physical fitness.
Know your limitations.
Practice.

"Generally panic is what kills you in a survival situation."

Snyderisms:

I'm not going to go into what twigs and berries and mushrooms you should eat because if you get to that point you're in deep caca.

If you’re going to be Jeremiah Johnson and start a fire with flint and steel, I highly suggest you practice said task in multiple environments, starting with your backyard and some gasoline because that crap ain’t easy.

My wife can get lost in a phone booth.

People leave with a T-shirt and a smile.

It’s good to stay alive — you don’t want to die.

“You think 100 sit-ups is a bunch? Hike 4 miles with that gorilla hanging off you. Your abs are so burnt!”

This week on Gritty Bowmen, shockingly! Aron Snyder and I talk about backpacks. Aron gives his tips on how to properly wear and fit a backpack. Aron tells me that “the chest strap is not a come-along choker strap” and shares other such nuggets of information. And as usual, Aron does not keep his opinions to himself and neither do I. So, we tried not to offend anyone but we probably failed. As Aron said, “For the most part you’re going to lose something with heavy weight hauling with an ultra-light pack.”

The audio on my microphone was a bit off and there are a couple of glitchy spots but they don’t last too long—Aron’s audio comes across loud and clear.

This week on Gritty Bowmen we meet again with Aron Snyder of Kifaru International to talk about why your pack is so freakin’ heavy.  At the end of this podcast you will know what Aron does to lighten his backpack.  As Aron explains in this podcast, most guys pack for Siberia but go to Africa.  Aron will also teach you how to modify your gear to make it lighter without sacrificing function. But you’ve got to be carful doing this. As Aron said, “Brian, “When you start hacking parts off your pack and you think you ‘might’ be wrong--you’re probably wrong. One of my army instructors told me that. But if that thing has been in your pack or part of your pack for 3 years and you’ve never used it... hack that thing off like Hannibal Lecter!”

This podcast is chalk full of what I call Aron Snyderisms.  Like, “ounces make pounds and pounds make pain.” And “usually it’s the bad-ass person who goes too ultralight and turns out to be the dumb-ass person.”

The podcast has some glitchy spots but it’s not too bad and the content is well-worth the time. In the last 30 minutes of theis podcast Aron and I go off on a tangent and talk about sponsorships in the hunting and outdoor industry--we talk about what we don’t like about sponsorships and why.  And Aron tells me what his favorite clothing choices are right now, right down to the brand name.  Which, will probably  make some people in the hunting industry mad at him.  Sorry Aron.

How to shed useless, dead weight-- pack lighter without sacrificing your comfort.

5 WAYS TO LIGHTEN YOUR PACK:

  1. Assess the situation. Don’t pack for Siberia when you’re going to Africa.
  2. Cutting and modifying your gear--shed useless weight.
  3. Splitting gear with your hunting buddies.
  4. Buy the lightest weight gear that you can afford that fits your style of hunting.
  5. Lose the weight off your ass.

When you’re pushing the envelope to save weight you can’t have our cake and eat it too. “My wife wants a gun that shoots down trees, doesn’t make noise and doesn’t kick -- and they just don’t have that...”

“It’s kind of like building a building... you can have quality, quantity, and cost-efficiency and you can have any two of those you want but you can’t have all 3.  It’s the same with paying the piper for lightweight.”

“First Lite makes a jacket we call the “unpronounceable”... the oounncompadre.”

Question: “What is a woobie and when do you use it?”
Answer: “Oh I know. And what’s horrible is Kifaru also makes a Doobie, which is probably because Patrick was a hippie.”
