On this episode of Gritty Bowmen we’re back with Cory Miller at xXx Archery Shop and he tells us about some of the cool new products he picked up at this year’s ATA show in Kentucky.

If you live in the NW and you’ve never been to the XXX archery shop, you should go there. Corey has a cool, indoor electronic shoot for you to play with. And he’s a limited distributor for Kifaru—so he has pack frames in his store that you can try on with an 85 pound bag of cement to see how it carries. And Corey is very knowledgeable about all things compound bow, backpacking, and hunting.

On this episode of Gritty Bowmen, we hang out with friend, Tim Burnett, of Solo Hunter at the MTN OPS booth at the Western Hunting and Conservation Expo in Salt Lake City. If you don’t watch Solo Hunter, I think you’re missing out. There are many great episodes but I highly recommend one of Tim’s most recent shows, Season 6, episode 13, GALE FORCE BOW HUNT--this is a December Mule Deer in ID. You can download this episode at SOLOHNTR.VHX.TV. Also, you can watch many of the prior season episodes of SOLO HNTR on Tim’s youtube channel--SOLO HNTR. You can find links to Tim’s shows in the show notes of this podcast. This podcast is a 4-man show; as my hunting partner, Anthony Spencer, and co-host Aron Snyder join in for a laid-back hunt chat with The SOLO HNTR.

On this episode of Gritty Bowmen. I and my hunting partner Anthony Spencer sit down with Russ Meyer and Corey Jacobsen at the Northwest Hunting and Conservation EXPO in Salt Lake City Utah. Anthony and I talk about the first time we met Russ, which was in the peaks of some Arizona mountains chasing elk in mid-september a few years back. Russ has got to be one of the most successful, under-the-radar hunters I’ve ever met. Kind of like Aron Snyder, Russ Meyer is a bit introverted. And like Aron, I think Russ is sometimes misunderstood by those on the outside looking in. But I find people like Russ fascinating. They don’t open-up that easily but once they do, they usually talk your ear off (ahem… Aron Snyder). In this podcast, Russ doesn’t disappoint. We get to know him a little better. He shares his knowledge on how to slay big game year after year, which he has done for decades. And Russ tells us what he does to raise his children with hunting. And we get to hear a little about how he and his wife work-out his days in the field, away from home for months at a time. And Corey Jacobsen shares his insight too—but mostly, I’d say he was just the eye candy.

On this episode of Gritty Bowmen we hang out with our ginger friends, Land Tawney and Ty Stubblefield of Backcountry Hunters and Anglers. This was my first chance to meet Land and it was a pleasure. Land Tawney is the Executive Director Backcountry Hunters and Anglers or BHA. And through BHA, Land fights to keep public lands public. And in case you’re wondering… Land is his real name--not his “show” name.

Ty Stubblefield is BHA Chapter Coordinator. Ty knows that hunters and fisherman are true conservationists and stewards of our lands. When Ty isn’t fighting for conservation causes he can be found in the wild places he loves with bow or fly-pole in hand. BHA understands that our public lands are not free and must be fought for.

I’m proud to call these ginger dudes friends.

If you’re not already, become a member of BHA today. And as a member, try to attend the annual BHA rendezvous this year, 2016, in Missoula, Montana on April first through the third. You can learn more about their annual shindig at rendezvous2016.com -- I hope to see you there.

EPISODE 79: On this episode of Gritty Bowmen, Aron Snyder and I hang out with Cameron Hanes at the ATA show in Kentucky. Prior to this event, I had never met Cameron Hanes. I’ve read his books. I’ve watched his blacktail films and some of his hunts with Eastmans. I’ve seen him and South Cox chase high country mule deer. I’ve seen him hunt giant brown bear with dear friend, Roy Roth. I’ve watched Cameron stalk cape buffalo in Australia and on and on. And of course, I’ve seen Cameron’s social media game, which is pretty strong. But I’ve never met the guy. You hear and see things… And I can’t help but admire his drive and passion for fitness… and his love of the outdoors and of the bowhunting life… but I had never actually sat down and talked to him. And much like my first meeting with Aron Snyder… I found Cameron to be a super cool dude. Easy to talk to. Genuine. And funny. Much like my own hunting buddies.

I was able to hit the local Crossfit gym in Kentucky with Cameron thanks to our mutual friend, Dan Staton, owner of Elk Shape. Dan lead a room full of hunters from the ATA show in a great team workout. Cameron was in his element. He loves fitness. And It was obvious. After the workout, Cameron took a group of us out to breakfast and there we laughed and swapped hunting stories and I couldn’t help... but think how it felt just like elk camp with my own buddies. At the end, he paid the bill. And I walked away from the experience thinking, I just like hunters. They’re cool people. And there is an instant brotherhood among us as long as we are able to keep our massive egos in check and be positive.

Jason’s films make you think. They tell a story and they’re sincere and heartfelt. Jason is deeply involved in conservation efforts, teaming up with organizations such as the Mule Deer Foundation and the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation. Jason is a talented filmmaker and skilled hunter. I look forward to what he does next.

On this episode of Gritty Bowmen we visit with Easton Corbin and Brandon Bates. These two guys were on a roll and had me laughing for a solid 25 minutes before I looked down and realized the record button had not been pushed on my recording device. we hadn’t captured any of the audio. I hope to get these two characters on a future show because they’re down-right fun. This episode is very short--just a few minutes with some cool dudes that’ll make you smile.

Some of you may recognize Brandon Bates as the host of the award winning show, RMEF Team Elk. Others may recognize him as the voice of the Professional Bull Riders or PBR, which he’s done for more than a decade.

And for those who don’t know, Easton Corbin is an American country music singer. AND a hunter. AND a cool dude. I hope to cross paths with these two fellas again someday.

On this episode of Gritty Bowmen we visit with David and Karin Holder of Raised Hunting. Raised Hunting is about an average american family that has used hunting as a platform to teach ethics and values to their family. I’ve been a big fan of David Holder ever since I first saw him on an early Primos hunting video. David and his family have accomplished a lot since then. Their hunting show captures the raw emotion that comes from an animal at close range, all while focusing on bringing you ultimate adventures with the highest regard to cinematography.

But the best thing about Raised Hunting, in my opinion, are the meaningful values and ideals that they share on their show. If you already know the holders, I hope this episode of the Gritty Bowmen makes you like them even more. And for those of you who have never met the Holders, I hope you take the time to look them up, watch their show and consider how you might use hunting to strengthen the relationships within your family and your community.

Ok folks. This episode of the Gritty Bowmen is probably NOT for everyone. If you’re looking for a reverent podcast about hunting and the outdoors--skip this episode. But if you want to hang out with a group of hunting buddies who know waaaaay too much about eachother, talk a little crap, and don’t pull any punches--this episode might be worth your time. The key word is “might.” We recorded this podcast in the hotel room, after midnight on the last night of the ATA show. It was supposed to be a re-cap of the ATA show and a podcast with Sean Degray about the Total Archery Challenge. However, the podcast quickly circled the drain and just became a series of squirrel chases and fresh Snyderisms. I seriously considered nevering publishing this podcast--EVER. But heck, why not. What you see is what you get. And that’s gritty.

There is a little bonus footage at the very end of this podcast… we were going to throw it away but then I figured… the bonus footage is about as useless as the rest of this podcast so why not just leave it in there.

You have been warned.

Aron and Brian talk about their recent podcast with Tim Gillingham, Rihana and Ty Cary and more. They also talk more about Aron’s venture into traditional bowhunting.

time hunting or fishing trips.

From the moment Daniel and Jules put their headsets on I was laughing. They were really easy to talk to and the chemistry between them was obvious--they’re like besties. And it’s contagious. These are fun people. They spend a lot of time road-trippin’ in their trailer. You can catch up with them on social media--it’s fun to see what they’re up to next. Wishes For Warriors

On this episode of Gritty Bowmen we visit with a GIANT man--Bryan Marshall, founder of Wishes For Warriors. And I’m not kidding. His head his huge. He’s built like a tank. He walks sideways through doors… or perhaps, he just kicks them in. We also meet with his two amigos and wounded warriors, Corey Garmon and Cameron  Stuart. We learn about his foundation, Wishes for Warriors, and how they’re making a difference in the lives of wounded veterans. These guys are solid. I’ve been known to complain, on occasion, about leg cramps, blisters, and chaffing… and I feel like it’s justified… until I meet someone like Corey Garmon. The dude is a triple amputee and he’s out hiking the hills and killing big bulls. These guys straight-up inspire. To learn more about Wishes For Warriors and how you can be a part of it, checkout our show notes on the Gritty Bowmen website.

Sadie Kennel has been hunting for about 7 years. She was born and raised in Idaho. What drives Sadie Kennel to hunt?

Sadie gets real about what it’s like to hunt in late season and what it’s like to hunt with her boyfriend, Jason Wright of Pure Elevation Productions.

Here's a little sample of today's podcast.

Sadie: My boot’s wet and he (Jason) gets the jetboil out and he’s trying to dry out my boot with the open flame and that’s not working. So finally he pulls out his dry sack that he has for his sleeping bag and says, “Here put this on”… I finally get out of the tent and I shove my foot in this dry bag and put it in my boot and I have my jetboil full of coffee and I’m just like dragging my feet over to the spot and it’s foggy… and we get there and I kinda see this weird silhouette. I thought it was a tree. It turns out it wasn’t a tree it was a deer.

Brian: How dramatically does that improve your mood?

Sadie: Oh instantly! It was like throw my pack off, gettin’ my crap together and I’m like, “Where are we sitting? Let’s do this!”
