On this episode of Gritty Bowmen I catch up with Aron Snyder. We talk Technology, Hunting, Garmin Xero, Traditional Archery, Human Competition, and what I'm going to do with all of the hunting footage we've taken over the past couple years. It's gritty.

On this episode of Gritty Bowmen I sit down with Bill Vanderheyden of Iron Will Outfitters. Bill is a mechanical engineer by trade. When he finally got the opportunity to shoot a nice bull the broadhead he was using failed him. It just didn’t penetrate but a few inches. He resolved to make a better broadhead.

On this episode of Gritty Bowmen I sit down with Jonathan O’Dell, Small Game Biologist for the Arizona Game and Fish Department and Sam Soholt, Professional Photographer (a.k.a. the guy who bought a school bus). This is the first installment of a series of episodes I made during my hunt with Randy Newberg, in Southern Arizona. Southern Arizona is AWESOME! It feels exotic, but you’re right here in the good ole’ US of A. Arizona is the convergence of all four North American Deserts which makes for the highest amount of biological diversity in North America. We discuss my Coatimundi attack, Sandhill Cranes (and how it’s my new favorite meat), Giant Jack Rabbits, Javelina, Quail, Waterfowl, and more. We talk about hunting seasons, the cost and how you really should be bringing your kids to Arizona to hunt.

Is there something in our DNA that is most self-actualized when we are hunting? And if so, what is it? I would argue that there are few activities on this planet that cause the human being to enter the “present moment” with more force and completeness than in that moment of truth just before we take an animal’s life. And hunting is more than that--there’s something spiritual in the harvest of an animal’s flesh and bone so that we may live--and not only live but so that we may thrive. Discomfort; frozen hands and feet, sleeping on the ground, hiking countless miles, denying the negative voices in your head, schooling your adrenaline, overcoming doubts, honing weapons skills; feeling nature--reading animal behavior; predicting the wind--being both predator and prey at the same time; these things awaken ethereal human senses that all-too-often lay dormant in the heart of the modern man. If these things are true, one-dimensional statements like, “I hunt for meat,” do not even scratch the surface for why we do what we do.
Our message needs to evolve; because it’s deep than what we’ve been saying. Today, I visit with my friend, Adam Janke, from The Journal Of Mountain Hunting. It’s always a pleasure to visit with Adam because he’s continually challenging my ideas and preconceived notions. I hope this episode gets you thinking about why you hunt and how you share your story--because everybody has one and how it’s told can make all the difference.

Hello friends. Today’s episode of Gritty Bowmen is pretty special, I think. My guests are Logan Ross and Aaron Hitchins from Rockhouse Motion. The first time I met Aaron and Logan I instantly liked them. Logan is, perhaps, one of the kindest and most thoughtful human beings I’ve ever met. And Aaron Hitchins has a sharp wit that reveals a deeply intelligent mind. To me, Logan is as conscientious as a person can be--a human trait that I deeply admire. While Aaron is the counterweight in their relationship; providing constancy, realism, and acceptance for what is. A year ago, Logan told us her story. She was new to hunting--even opposed to hunting before she met Aaron. But then… she learned about hunting; Logan has always been conscientious about where her food came from--and with that as a foundation, she embarked on a bowhunting journey with Aaron. Bowhunting is HARD. And Logan failed at it despite her best efforts. At the end of the 2016 hunting season--Logan still could not answer the question, “can I kill an animal--and if I do, will I be okay with it?”

Well... the 2017 hunting season has come to a close… and Logan is ready to answer to those questions. I hope this episode inspires you like it inspires me… to be a better person. To be more conscientious in how I hunt and live. Please take the time to invite your non-hunting friends and family to listen to Logan’s story. Because it matters--it’s the oft-unspoken side of the hunter’s heart and soul

Hello friends. Today on Gritty, my guest is Ben O’brien, Hunting Marketing Manager at YETI Coolers and previously, the Executive Editor at Petersen’s Bowhunting. AND, something I’m excited about… Ben has launched his own podcast called, The Hunting Collective. Ben seems older to me than his young age suggests… He’s a young chap with an old soul. What I like most about Benny--he’s not afraid to speak his mind; even when it’s not popular. At the same time--Ben doesn’t think he’s got all the answers--he’s a man open to new ideas and I like that about him.

Recently, Ben took a poll on Instagram. The poll asked, “should hunters get rid of the grip and grin pic?” As you can imagine, this question sparked some serious debate. And naturally, I had to ask Ben about it on the podcast. It’s okay, because Ben’s a deep thinker--he can get all philosophical on you--in a good way. He’s been some places--seen some things. He’s not naive to the broad world outside of hunting. It’s his job at YETI to make sure that hunting is represented in a positive light.

In today’s modern world, we all have a voice. How do we use it? Join us as we explore this topic and more on today’s Gritty Bowmen podcast.

“Never underestimate the influence of the human spirit. We are all the same in this notion: The potential for greatness lives within each of us. - Wilma Rudolph

PART TWO-
Today on Gritty, we talk about an insidious, silent killer; a life-sucking force that people naively and foolishly welcome into their lives. A life-wrecking force that the fast-changing modern age has thrust upon the modern human mind. This insidious killer is STRESS. Today, I’m joined by the deep-thinking, intense and amazing, Doctor Hillary Lampers. She explains stress in clinical and colloquial terms. She talks about how our bodies and brains are all that we really have and how we should treat them. Human beings have evolved to thrive under stress--we need stress. But today’s modern stress is different--it’s a different animal from the kind of stress human beings NEED. Find out the difference and more about how to live “better” on today’s episode. You can learn more from Doctor Hillary’s website at HuntHarvestHealth.com.

Today on Gritty Bowmen we hang out with friend Donnie Vincent. I could sit an listen to Donnie tell stories for hours. He’s an explorer, biologist, conservationist, and sportsman. And a gifted weaver of adventurous tales in wild and remote places. When Donnie’s storytelling transcends the spoken word  and comes to life in the form of cinematic film--it’s incredible. His films change hearts and minds. And films like, “Who We Are,” “The River’s Divide,” and “Terra Nova,” have permanently changed how I view the world and the hunt. So sit back and enjoy the show. And then, if you haven’t already, support Donnie by getting his film’s at www.donnievincent.com.

Those who know me, know that I love a good hunting story. And I’m no Donnie Vincent but Gritty Bowmen has its own brand of filmmaking--it’s kinda Gritty… it’s a bit unpolished, it usually has a few smart-aleck comments, some shaky footage, some adventure and it reminds you of the hunts you go on with your buddies.

So with that preamble, I have an announcement to make. On Thursday, February 8th at the Western Hunt Expo in Salt Lake City, I’ll be showing my latest Gritty film on the big screen. And it’s not just my film that’ll be showing, my good friend Cole Kramer will also be featuring his YETI film from Nepal that night as well. There will be Gritty Bingo, Prizes, Raffles, Giveaways and much more! My good friends at Sitka Gear, YETI, HOYT, MTN OPS, and Leupold Optics are helping to make this event a fun one! Raffle proceeds go to the Rocky Mountain Goat Alliance.

Please, if you want to support Gritty and you’re coming to the Western Hunt Expo, please go to www.mtnops.com/gritty and get tickets now.

Please spread the word--invite your friends and family, and come see what a Gritty Movie Night is all about.

Here’s a 30-second trailer for the film--check it out.
