On this episode of Gritty Bowmen, we hang out with our friend Cory Miller, owner of xXx Archery, at his bowshop in Rainier Oregon. We talk to Cory about compound-bow tuning. This podcast has some visual footage that you will want to watch if this stuff is new to you. At the very end of this podcast we inserted some video footage of Cory teaching my cousin Ben how to properly grip and hold a compound bow when shooting. In Cory’s experience as a tournament bow shooter for PSE and an archery shop owner--improper grip is one of the most common mistakes that he sees in archery shooters. Checkout the video at the end of this podcast for a brief lesson from Cory on how the grip should be done. If you live in the area, check-out xXx Archery--it’s worth the drive. And now, Cory has a super-cool Techno Shoot that’s a blast to play with. Go to our website or to our Youtube channel to see a video of Cousin Ben and the Gritty Scotsman go head-to-head in a Techno Shoot-out. It’s good, gritty fun.

On this episode of Gritty Bowmen, we hang out with traditional archer, conservationist, and film producer Clay Hayes of Twisted Stave Media. On this podcast we on location at the Backcountry Hunters and Anglers Annual Rendezvous. Clay makes his own bows and hunts with them--he carves them out of a piece of wood. He’s a “real” hard-core traditional archer. He and I and Mark Brownlee get to know each-other on this podcast. We talk about his films, which I highly recommend. And I think Clays films are especially good to share with your non-hunting friends. You can find his films at http://www.twistedstave.com/ I really like Clay. He’s a deep and thoughtful person. And his films are the same.

On this episode of Gritty Bowmen I travel to Boise Idaho and visit with friend, Russ Meyer and his wife Carole. This podcast is about relationships--it’s about life AND hunting. It’s about balance. The balance between the drive to be outdoors, often away from the ones we love most, and time at home with family. Many couples struggle when one person in the family has a passion for hunting that the other doesn’t understand. And it goes both ways. Sometimes the passionate hunter alienates their loved ones in the pursuit and fulfillment of their own personal interest to be in the mountains, in the deserts, or on the water. Many relationships have crashed and burned in the unreconcilable void between the hunter and those he or she leaves at home.   How does a couple reconcile their differences? Why do these differences strengthen some relationships while destroying others.

In this podcast, we talk to a couple who seems to have figured out how to reconcile their differences. We are going to find out what works for them. You will hear about the struggles they’ve had as a couple and how they’ve overcome them.

The more I get to know a person, the more I realize how much we’re alike as human beings. We all have fears and doubts. We all struggle--life isn’t always easy. But life is awesome. The journey is awesome. And in this podcast we get to know Russ and Carole on a more intimate level. I want to thank them for sharing their lives so openly. I tend to talk too much in this podcast. For those of you who don’t know Russ, let me tell you something about him--he’s a man of few words. Let’s just say he’s not going to dominate the conversation. That said, my goal is to understand him--to get to know him; to find out what he thinks and why he does the things he does. As a result, I find myself talking quite a bit about my own experiences in this podcast. And as Carole gives me insight into their lives--I cannot help but share my own thoughts on the subjects discussed. So please indulge my excessive input. And I hope, in some small way, that this podcast helps you strengthen the relationships in your own life.

On this episode of Gritty Bowmen we hang out with Heather Theresa Kelly. Heather Kelly is an evolutionary sports nutritionist. She is the owner and operator of OPENutrition and the creator of Heather's Choice. She attended college at Western Washington University, where she was a two time NCAA National Champion in women's rowing. She was born and raised in Alaska and she loves adventuring in the backcountry; she is an all around badass. And a nerd. A food nerd. And  that’s how Heather’s Choice was born. Heather has created her own, epic backcountry meals and they’re now available to all of us. All of the recipes Heather has developed for Heather's Choice are meant to be nutritionally balanced, and made with the highest quality ingredients available. Heather believes that everyone deserves to have a healthy + satisfying relationship with food, which comes from eating nutritious + satiating foods. If you like what Heather is doing, support her company. Go online to HeathersChoice.com and buy some of her products and give them a try. I recommend Heather’s Packaroons; I especially like the Orange Vanilla Bean packaroons. They’re rad. But order more than one package. Because you’ll want to eat another package of them as soon as you finish the first.

On this episode of Gritty Bowmen, Mark Brownlee and myself visit with Ryan Callaghan and Kenton Carruth of First Lite at the annual BHA Rendezvous. Since 2007, First Lite Clothing has been dedicated to building the best hunting gear on the market out of the most reliable materials and fabrics. Aron Snyder has been a long-time proponent of First Lite gear and for good reason. Not only do they make top quality technical clothing--the company is also ran by some of the coolest cats in the hunting industry--guys and gals who actually get outside and use their gear--and perhaps most importantly, guys who give back to the hunting industry and to nature by proactively investing in conservation efforts year-round. Kenton and Ryan are the kind of guys you want to hunt with; entertaining, hard-working, and gritty.

On this episode of Gritty Bowmen, Mark Brownlee and myself visit with Randy Newberg and Jeff Sposito. Randy Newberg is the host and producer of the TV show Fresh Tracks with Randy Newberg--a show about self-guided hunting on public lands. Randy is also the host of  Hunt Talk Radio, aka, Randy Newberg Unfiltered. As an avid conservationist, Randy advocates on behalf of hunters, educating his audience in the role hunters have played in restoring wildlife to America in what he calls “The greatest story never told.” Randy shares his passion for our public lands, a place for all hunters, “whether they are, or are not, a man of means.” Jeff Sposito is with Sitka Gear and he is also an avid conservationist and with a little help from Randy has launched a new conservation program titled, “2% for conservation.” It was my pleasure to have them on the podcast. And if you’re not already, I hope each of you who are listening will take the time follow Randy. He’s kind of an old dude--sorry Randy--but Newberg has been around awhile and he knows a bit of history that most young hunters don’t have a clue about. And I’m grateful he’s on our side--that we’ve got someone like Randy advocating on behalf of public lands and the animals that live on them. And do what you can to support Jeff’s project, 2% For Conservation. Call him up, get on his website, follow him on Instagram--ask him how you can help. Remember this quote by Shane Mahoney; because it’s true: “Wildlife and wild places no longer exist by accident or without the intervention of those that truly and deeply care.”

Okay Friends on this episode of Gritty Bowmen I sit down with Aron Snyder and we talk about sleeping bags and pads. We get into some stuff about water bottles vs. nalgene bottlesand so on.  It’s a pretty good podcast, but we screwed up on the audio and when I say we I mean I screwed up on the audio. So it’s not as crisp as it usually is. So forgive me on that. But, it’s a good podcast so I hope you get some good info out of it. I did. -Stay Gritty
