“You think 100 sit-ups is a bunch? Hike 4 miles with that gorilla hanging off you. Your abs are so burnt!”

This week on Gritty Bowmen, shockingly! Aron Snyder and I talk about backpacks. Aron gives his tips on how to properly wear and fit a backpack. Aron tells me that “the chest strap is not a come-along choker strap” and shares other such nuggets of information. And as usual, Aron does not keep his opinions to himself and neither do I. So, we tried not to offend anyone but we probably failed. As Aron said, “For the most part you’re going to lose something with heavy weight hauling with an ultra-light pack.”

The audio on my microphone was a bit off and there are a couple of glitchy spots but they don’t last too long—Aron’s audio comes across loud and clear.

This week on Gritty Bowmen we meet again with Aron Snyder of Kifaru International to talk about why your pack is so freakin’ heavy.  At the end of this podcast you will know what Aron does to lighten his backpack.  As Aron explains in this podcast, most guys pack for Siberia but go to Africa.  Aron will also teach you how to modify your gear to make it lighter without sacrificing function. But you’ve got to be carful doing this. As Aron said, “Brian, “When you start hacking parts off your pack and you think you ‘might’ be wrong--you’re probably wrong. One of my army instructors told me that. But if that thing has been in your pack or part of your pack for 3 years and you’ve never used it... hack that thing off like Hannibal Lecter!”

This podcast is chalk full of what I call Aron Snyderisms.  Like, “ounces make pounds and pounds make pain.” And “usually it’s the bad-ass person who goes too ultralight and turns out to be the dumb-ass person.”

The podcast has some glitchy spots but it’s not too bad and the content is well-worth the time. In the last 30 minutes of theis podcast Aron and I go off on a tangent and talk about sponsorships in the hunting and outdoor industry--we talk about what we don’t like about sponsorships and why.  And Aron tells me what his favorite clothing choices are right now, right down to the brand name.  Which, will probably  make some people in the hunting industry mad at him.  Sorry Aron.

Featured in this Podcast:

How to shed useless, dead weight-- pack lighter without sacrificing your comfort.

5 WAYS TO LIGHTEN YOUR PACK:

  1. Assess the situation. Don’t pack for Siberia when you’re going to Africa.
  2. Cutting and modifying your gear--shed useless weight.
  3. Splitting gear with your hunting buddies.
  4. Buy the lightest weight gear that you can afford that fits your style of hunting.
  5. Lose the weight off your ass.

When you’re pushing the envelope to save weight you can’t have our cake and eat it too. “My wife wants a gun that shoots down trees, doesn’t make noise and doesn’t kick -- and they just don’t have that...”

“It’s kind of like building a building... you can have quality, quantity, and cost-efficiency and you can have any two of those you want but you can’t have all 3.  It’s the same with paying the piper for lightweight.”

“First Lite makes a jacket we call the “unpronounceable”... the oounncompadre.”

Question: “What is a woobie and when do you use it?”
Answer: “Oh I know. And what’s horrible is Kifaru also makes a Doobie, which is probably because Patrick was a hippie.”

This week on Gritty Bowmen we talk about some of the camera gear we use to film our hunts and make our movies. We don’t claim to be professional cameramen at Gritty Bowmen. There are a lot of guys out there who know a lot more than we do about filmmaking. And that’s great. But when I was getting into filmmaking I had difficulty finding the resources I needed to step up my game. By the end of today’s podcast you’ll have a clear understanding of the equipment we use and we’ll provide you with some useful links to training materials we’ve used as well as links to the equipment we prefer.

There is some footage that was taken with a Canon DSLR 70D, a Sony 4K camcorder and a consumer grade Sony Handicam. You can compare the footage between the cameras for yourselves at the end of this podcast. All the footage will be raw and will not have any image correction done on them.

Thanks for watching.

That’s it for EPISODE 4 of the Gritty Bowmen podcast. Part 2 of Are you a Stalker? Stalking Monster Mule Deer w/South Cox & Stalker Stickbows.

I got a lot of information out of these two podcasts with South on how to kill a monster mule deer. In summary, South explained the need to have a positive attitude and Mental Toughness. Another key to his success is that South gets remote with a focus on wilderness areas.
And South looks for hunting grounds with what he calls “Micro Topography” .
South likes to stalk from above. This helps him with wind. Because deer bedded on hillsides tend to face downhill and therefore don’t see you coming. South also finds it easier to sneak in on the animal from above when you need to stay low or crawl. Unlike some hunters, South likes to wait until the animal beds down before he stalks his deer. South recommends buying the best glass you can afford. South stressed the importance of mounting your binoculars to a tripod. And when glassing, don’t just glass from the main ridgeline. Walk out on the finger-ridges that branch off the main ridge line and glass to the end of the finger ridge. South likes lightweight boots that have soft soles—he finds them quieter and they help him when hopping through a boulder field. He mentioned Solomon boots, the Lowa Zephyr, Lowa Renegade, and one of his favorites, the Ahnu Elk Ridge Mid. At 70 to 100 yards from his quarry, South sheds his boots and dons a thick pair of socks to silently close the distance. But he recommends marking the location of your boots somehow so you don’t lose your boots. And South likes Smoke in a Bottle brand wind checker. South carries 3 things in his front right pocket. Chapstick, lens cloth, and  Smoke in a bottle.
