EPISODE 27: Elk Hunting-How Corey Jacobsen Does It! Part 1

Show Notes:

Elk Hunting Tactics - Strategies

What is the most important think you can’t fake you have to put effort into for Elk Hunting? What’s the one thing you need to be focusing on? "Confidence."

Which you gain from experience.  That killer instinct comes from experience.

“It’s all about channeling that adrenaline rush.” “Channel that excitement into the thrill of the hunt.” Corey Jacobsen

Corey’s Typical Setup

“I want a fight! I want him coming in hot.”

Closing the distance- Get as close as you can get. When you hit that point you can’t go any further, stop and set up.

Shooting lanes- We say, “This is where we want the bull to come in.”

Caller moves back 30-40 yards.  Just to a point where the bull has to come into the shooters lane before seeing the caller.

The Caller lets out a simple cow callOnce the bull responds- as soon as he responds- no matter what he responds with the caller hits him with a challenge bugle. Be immediate. In fact we usually cut him off. Put that aggression and emotion into it.

“It works!”

SHOW NOTES:

This week on Gritty Bowmen we meet with Jordan and Casey Harbertson of MTN OPS. These two guys are salt-of-the-earth, good guys who LOVE what they're doing.

Performance and fitness are very important to me. But I care less about performance and more about long-term health and wellness. I want to be elk hunting in the mountains when I'm 70 years old-- and I'm not kidding. So I'm not willing to sacrifice my health at the future age of 65 for increased performance today. I'm a huge skeptic when it comes to supplements. Instead of buying supplements I have tried my best to get all my nutrition from healthy foods. I really don't like meal replacements or performance enhancing products. I prefer a good elk steak with a pile of veggies, high fiber fruit and some water.

“Experience in the field has caused me to change my views.” Aron Snyder

“I like a quieter bow. A heavy arrow makes your bow quieter.” Aron Snyder

“If you can shoot 280 feet per second that’s plenty fast.”

“I  like seeing an animal with a shock wave like it got hit with a 50 cal BMG. It just makes me feel tougher I guess. So I like the heavy arrows.”

International Bow Hunters Association- IBO speed

"Shoot what you’re most comfortable with that gives you the best happy medium for speed, for kinetic energy for momentum the whole nine yards and not-like backpacks— not go in and say what’s the lightest? Don’t go in and try to get the fastest bow you can get. If you go in with your motive of trying to get the fastest bow possible— It’s probably also the hardest to shoot.”

On this episode of Gritty Bowmen we meet with Jay Scott. Jay is the mastermind behind the Jay Scott Outdoors Big Game Hunting and Fishing Podcast. He has more than 50 podcast episodes with tremendous guests on a broad range of topics all related to western big game hunting and fishing.

Jay lives in Scottsdale, Arizona with his wife Jeanne. Jay has been a professional hunting and fishing guide in the state of Arizona for 16 years. He spends more than 120 days in the field guiding and hunting across the United States. And Jay is currently a Field Editor for Western Hunter Magazine and hunting editor for Elk Hunter Magazine. As well as being a hunter, Jay’s other passion is fly fishing.

In today’s podcast you’ll hear us discuss the stigma that much of the DIY hunting community harbors toward hunting guides and the use of hunting guide services. Jay and I discuss the use of sponsorships--or, the paid promotion of products--We talk about their value and their sometimes negative impact on the hunting industry. And although we both promote health and fitness, Jay brings up a valid concern which I agree with--that some hunters place so much emphasis on fitness that they fail to learn fieldcraft, how to sit still for hours, how to read sign and track game, and other basic and not-so-basic hunting and fishing skills.

It was a pleasure meeting Jay Scott. I applaud his podcast and I look forward to hearing more great content from Jay and his stellar guests. I am Brian Call and I am your host. And without further ado, here is today’s podcast.

In today’s podcast we travel to Hoodoo Oregon for the second-leg of the NW Mt Challenge. We meet up with Kody Kellom of Born and Raised Outdoors and Jon Walusiak, joint owners of the Full Draw Film Tour. Jon is also the owner of W- Design company. These two guys are the engine that run the Full Draw Film Tour. Now... some of you may be asking, “what is the Full Draw Film Tour?” To quote the Gritty Scotsman, “If you donn’a know what the tour is, you need to climb out from under the rock you been livin’ under and listen to this podcast.”

In this podcast you’ll learn all about the Full Draw Film Tour. You’ll learn about Jon and Kody’s vision behind it. As Kody said: “Our goal with the FDFT is to capture them, move them, and change them.” You’ll hear Kody and Jon’s opinion on the 3 ingredients that make a good film based on their combined years of experience running the tour and literally observing nearly 100 different audiences--learning what they like, what captures them, what moves them and what changes them.

I first met Kody at the FDF School. Where I met South Cox, Kristy Titus, Born and Raised Outdoors, Joe Sanchez, Grady Rawls, Walt Ramage and more. We were put into teams of 3 and I was grouped with Kristy Titus and Josh Keller who were a TON of fun. And these people inspired me.

And for this reason and many more, I have a special affection for this tour and these guys. It’s undeniable that the Full Draw Film Tour has had a huge impact on my life.

So it was pleasure to sit and talk to Jon and Kody about the tour. To hear about the money they’ve raised for charities like hunt of a lifetime and Wishes for Warriors. To hear how the tour has inspired people and changed lives. I STILL think the tour should have been called The GRITTY Full Draw Film Tour, but whatever.

I’m Brian Call, and I’m your host, Mark Brownlee--the Gritty Scotsman--is my co-host and without Further ado, here is today’s podcast.
